Carly & Brendan live in Bowen just North of Airlie Beach, they knew that there was no place they would rather be on their wedding day. Unfortunately mother nature had another day in mind for them. Cyclone Debbie tore through the Whitsundays in 2017 leaving the area completely devastated. Being from Bowen they knew the wrath of Cyclone Debbie & feared for their wedding plans made prior to Debbie reigning havoc. Fortunately we were able to organise a picture perfect wedding day at Lure as their ceremony & reception venues had been left in ruins. We were so happy to be apart of this day & share the many trials & tribulations of organising their wedding day. If Carly & Brendan could face this then we have no doubt their new life together with flourish!
Tell us your love story, how did you meet?
Brendan and I met at high school. He asked me to be his girlfriend three times before I gave in and said yes!
Why did you choose Airlie Beach for your destination wedding?
We lived in Bowen before we were engaged and were both raised in North Queensland, so we had visited the Whitsundays many times before. We loved the natural beauty of the area and its super relaxed vibe which was the exact atmosphere we wanted for our wedding.
If I’m completely honest it was Cyclone Debbie that led us to holding our wedding at Lure. Brendan and I are organised people and had booked our initial reception venue two years before our wedding. Fast forward to March 2017 and Cyclone Debbie arrived in the Whitsundays leaving behind significant damage to many homes and businesses, including our initial reception venue. Three weeks out from our wedding and we had no longer had a reception venue.
Lure is such a spectacular venue, the view is stunning and the building itself is modern and elegant.
How lucky we were that Lure was available on our date, and we snapped up their opening in a second. I couldn’t have been happier with the service we received from the staff at Lure. Lure is such a spectacular venue, the view is stunning and the building itself is modern and elegant. As it was the wind played havoc with our initial ceremony location plans and we ended up holding our ceremony at Lure too. It was clearly meant to be. We had 92 guests and had a sit down dinner. We always intended on having a sit down dinner, as we really liked the idea of our guests catching up and sharing a meal and drink together.
Key Styling Inspiration
Our style was intimate, relaxed, earthy and elegant. We used lots of neutral colours, rose gold and some pink pastels and native flowers within our bouquets and buttonholes. We featured lots of greenery with white roses and candles.
What did you do for your honeymoon?
We honeymooned in Hawaii via Sydney, and spent time in Honolulu on the main island of Oahu, and Lahaina on the island of Maui.
What was the funniest moment from the day?
I felt like I laughed all day! We both laughed the most during the speeches and the photos with our bridal party.
What was the most special memory from the day?
t sounds cheesy but we really can’t pick our favourite parts of the day, the whole day was absolutely perfect. I thought I’d cry during the ceremony but somehow I managed to hold it in. The water works turned on though during our photographer’s slideshow during the reception, I loved that we could both see how the day went and share it with our guests. This was definitely a highlight of our day for both of us.
What advice would you give other brides to be?
Don’t stress the small stuff, it all works out perfectly on the big day (even if there’s a cyclone three weeks out from the day!). We found using a wedding planner invaluable, Jess from The Wedding Planners Whitsundays contacted all our vendors during the week leading up to the wedding and coordinated and organised our day to a tee so it ran perfectly.
If there’s one thing you invest in, make sure it’s your photographer / videographer. After the big day is said and done, photos and videos are all you have to reminisce on the best day of your life.
We ending up needing to move our ceremony venue on the day at the last minute and Jess coordinated this change absolutely perfectly. We were very organised in our planning which proved to be useful given our last minute venue change, but it also made for an otherwise stress-free week leading up to our wedding. If there’s one thing you invest in, make sure it’s your photographer / videographer. After the big day is said and done, photos and videos are all you have to reminisce on the best day of your life.
