Being from Melbourne, Helen and Gordon would never dream of having a winter wedding down south. But escaping the cold and holding an intimate wedding in the Whitsundays, in winter, was just the ticket. With an average winter temperature of 24-26 degrees, these Melbournites revelled in all the Whitsundays has to offer.
Why did you choose the Whitsundays as your wedding destination?
We wanted a beautiful beach setting with some relatively predictable whether, We’re from Melbourne so having a wedding on a beach near us just seemed WAY too risky!!
Melbourne in known for having 4 seasons in one day so it just seemed logical to escape to paradise!
Had you visited the Whitsundays before?
We came up to Airlie Beach to check out wedding locations just over a year before our wedding date. I’m so glad we made the trip up there to choose our wedding location, it made all the difference for planning the day and selecting our suppliers.
Why did you choose Headland Park and Coral Sea Resort for your wedding venues?
We originally wanted to have our ceremony on the sand of Boathaven beach, but our plans were changed late in the piece, so we moved the ceremony to Headland Park, and I’m really glad we did! It was absolutely perfect and the view is just amazing.
The reception on the grass at Coral Sea was a no brainer, the venue is absolutely stunning and probably has some of the best food in Airlie Beach. All our guests raved about the food we had on the buffet and the large selection available.
How long did you stay in the Whitsundays and did you do any pre or post activities whilst here?
We arrived in Airlie on the Thursday before our Sunday wedding. It was just enough time for us to have final appointments with our key suppliers to finalise the day and go through a rehearsal with our bridal party.
Quite a few of our family were staying in Airlie for a holiday after the wedding, so we made a swift escape on part 1 of our honeymoon to Hayman island on the Tuesday after our wedding (That island is absolute Bliss!! and we were definitely glad to have some space away from our families to absorb what just happened).
What was the best thing about having a destination wedding?
We really wanted a small intimate wedding where we would easily be able to spend time with all of our guests. Being further away from home definitely helped us achieve that.
It was also a bonus to escape from the grey dull winter weather we have in Melbourne.
Did your wedding have a theme or a particular style?
I didn’t intentionally have a specific theme, I just chose things that went together and I was pretty happy with the result. I must admit Pintrest was amazing for ideas!
Where did you splurge and where did you save?
I didn’t really cut corners anywhere in our wedding, we were lucky enough to have extremely generous parents who helped us make the day everything we dreamed of!
The only thing I did do to save some cash was limit our time in Hayman Island. The Island is beautiful but we only stayed 4 nights to limit the cost. To be honest I’m glad we did that because we would have put on about 50kgs if we stayed any longer, the food is devine!!!
What did you do for your hens and bucks nights?
My hens was fairly low key, we did some hula hooping as an activity at my place followed by a trip to the city to a cocktail bar and a pub/club for a bit of dancing. (My hens was a challenge, I was 12 weeks pregnant at the time and it’s not easy trying to convince a bunch of friends that you’re drinking when you’re not!!).
