Mel and Jay didn’t want to have a big wedding, but they did plan a very big day for themselves and their nearest and dearest. Jay and guests started the day out boarding a luxury yacht, enjoying canapés and drinks while cruising out to Whitehaven Beach. Mel and her parents flew via helicopter to Whitehaven Beach. The ceremony started with Mel and her family stepping out onto the white silica sand as the music started. The day didn’t end there, upon returning to Airlie Beach Tuk Tuk’s met the group to take them to their private dinner at Coral Sea Resort complete with fairy lights, delectable menu and live entertainment.
Tell us about the proposal.
We were in Thailand for Jay’s sister’s wedding. For the following night, Jay planned a romantic private dinner on the beach and even phoned Mel’s dad for permission. It was very spontaneous so Jay used a ring from the Thai markets and got down on one knee as the sun was setting. Spoiler alert: she said yes!
Why did you choose Airlie Beach for your destination wedding?
After looking at local options, as opposed to heading back to Victoria to be closer to extended family and friends and considering many options in between, we chose to stay close and keep it simple. We were searching for options around the Whitsundays when Jess from The Wedding Planners Whitsundays offered us a ceremony at Whitehaven Beach and it sounded like a dream come true!
What gifts did you give your guests?
An experience and memories to last a life time!
Key Styling Inspiration
It is easy to be inspired by the beach when you live in paradise. We added splashes of orange tones with some vintage flair. Our DIY details included our invitations that were sent as a message in a bottle, we echoed this in our ceremony and used a bottle in place of a ring pillow.
What did you do for your hens and bucks night?
AS we had a small ceremony with our parents, Jay and the Dads went fishing the day before while Mel and the Mums enjoyed some pampering with manicures and pedicures. We all met up that night for dinner at our favourite place, Walter’s Lounge.
What did you do for your honeymoon?
We enjoyed our ‘Mini-Moon’, staying at Coral Sea Resort in Airlie Beach. From whale watching from the Derwent Hunter to a sunset cruise, stand up paddle-boarding and champagne spas, as well as tasting everything Airlie Beach has to offer, we had an absolute ball! We’ll be planning a leisurely holiday abroad at a later date.
What was the funniest moment from the day?
Following our photo tour, we went via a Tuk-Tuk to meet our guests at the harbour. With a ‘Just Married’ sign on the back and the driver beeping and hollering, we were met with cheers from the crowds at the foreshore’s bars and restaurants. It was a blast and completely hilarious!
What was the most special memory from the day?
The whole experience was spectacular, however the helicopter to and from Whitehaven Beach really stood out. We look forward to helicopter rides again one day in the future and think a flight to Heart Reef would be a fantastic way to celebrate an anniversary.
What advice would you give other brides to be?
Remember that your day IS your day, no ‘but’s’ and no ‘what if’s’. It’s not about trying to please your guests, the right ones will be happy to be invited.
Keep calm and hire The Wedding Planners Whitsundays!
It’s all about celebrating the love you’ve found and the beginning on what’s to come. Take it all in and enjoy what is a wonderful experience, one that will stay with you for life.
Special Thanks to……
Everyone that was involved in our day was absolutely fantastic! Not only did they help us create a perfect experience, they were part of it. We would have happily had them as wedding guests and formed some lasting friendships. A special mention to our photographer Debbie from Tropix, who is an absolute treasure! Deb had us relaxed and laughing and completely enjoying ourselves and produced some magical images as a result. And of course we cannot thank our wedding planner Jess enough, and also Roxanne who did everything when we weren’t looking.
Jess made everything so easy, with no stress and no task too difficult to undertake. We certainly could not have had our perfect wedding without her.
